How do you calculate cost per mile for trucking?

Add your fixed monthly costs (truck payment, insurance, permits) and divide by miles driven — that's your fixed cost per mile. Then add your per-mile variable costs: fuel (diesel price ÷ MPG) plus maintenance and tires. The total is what every mile actually costs you before you make a dime.

What rate should I charge?

Whatever rate-per-mile you accept has to be above your total cost per mile, or you're losing money. Most owner-operators target a healthy margin on top — this calculator shows the break-even line so you can negotiate from real numbers.
