What is a "square" in roofing?

One roofing square = 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers order materials by the square. To get your squares, multiply the roof's actual (sloped) area by your pitch factor, divide by 100, then add waste for cuts, hips, and valleys.

How many bundles of shingles per square?

Standard 3-tab and architectural shingles come 3 bundles per square. So a 25-square roof needs about 75 bundles, plus extra for waste. Always round up and buy a little extra.
